Key West Fishing Frequently Asked Questions

How much of a deposit is needed to reserve any given charter?
We require a 20% deposit of the total fare as deposit for a reservation with one of our guides. This can be done via check made out to Dream Catcher Charters or credit card over the phone. I.e. day of fishing $400.00 your deposit will be $80.00. If sending a check is preferred we will hold the day for you for one week or 5 business days until we receive check. See our Rates and Booking Page.
What if I have to cancel my trip?

Let us know as soon as you can so we can reschedule the boat on another trip.  If a cancellation happens inside the cancellation period and we cannot rebook the boat then you forfeit your deposited amount. Please see cancellation policies in our Reservations Page. Extenuating circumstances are dealt with on a per case basis.

Seasickness and my charter?

Boat charters have a wonderful effect on those that get motion sick. If you feel as though you or someone in your group has a problem with motion sickness please consider avoiding the offshore fishing charters. If you still intend on going offshore please take a precautionary drug such as Dramamine, Bonine or Trip tone at least 45 minutes prior to your charter's departure. No refunds will be issued due to seasickness.

Bad weather and my charter?

Cancellations due to bad weather are the captains discretion. Should a charter or tour be cancelled due to captain's discretion a refund will be issued for the unused portion of your activity unless there is a rescheduling.

Alcohol and my charter?

Bring it! It's Key West and you are here to enjoy. If drinking is your game then let the games begin. Here are a few tips. Heat, alcohol, and motion do not always mix. When drinking out in the sun chase a beer/cocktail with a bottle of water to avoid dehydration. Govern yourself; if you are sight fishing on the flats this takes talent, so consume accordingly to get the most out of your charter. No glass bottles please. NOTE: Flats fishing takes coordination and concentration and there is nowhere to put your beer while you fish. Consider a bay boat if beer drinking while flats fishing is your intention.

Can I mount my fish?

Catch a trophy? Want to take it home? We offer artificial replica mounting that is second to none. And what's best yet is the fish lives on in the water and on your wall. Let your guide know you are looking for a mount so that he gets the proper info from your catch.

Catch and Release Policies
At Dream Catcher Charters we pride ourselves on catch and release tactics to ensure the future of our fishery.. However.. If a client wants a few fish for dinner or to take home we can and will accommodate. Fish cleaning will be provided with zip lock bags at the end of your trip. We will also offer you recommendations of places to take your fish to be cooked for you locally. NOTE: On any of our charters we will not leave the dock with the goal of "Filling The Coolers". We do not market our selves to Meat Hunters nor do we wish for them as clients. We will recommend guides that offer Meat Trips and be happy to book them for you.
About Flats Fishing Charters
Do I have to fly fish in order to fish the flats?

No, fly fishing is not required to catch fish on the flats of Key West or anywhere. However, lessons are available and our guides are always patient and friendly should you be "Fly Curious." Little secret, you have a better chance at catching more fish using live bait and a spinning rod if you are not an experienced fly fisher person.

3 persons in flats boat. Why is this not a good idea?

Flats boats are shallow water boats because of their weight. If you want your guide for the day to show you the very best in flats fishing he needs to remain light. Also, 3 anglers in a 16-18 ft boat is a bit much. We do have guides that offer it for an extra $75.00 for the 3rd person. An Alternative for the same money is to go with a Bay Boat. This has been a growing trend among our 2 person trips all the way to 4 person trips. Check out our bay boat page or our Bay Boats vs Flats Boats article.

Should I bring my own gear?

Only if you absolutely want to. There really is no reason. We offer you some of the finest gear available today with each charter. Top of the line fly and spin fishing gear. I am certain you will not be disappointed.

Can I eat my fish?
Traditionally flats fishing has been a catch and release sport only. Bonefish, Tarpon and Permit may be edible in some countries but we do not make it a practice to eat them here. If on your charter you would like to stop and get a few snappers for the cooks at your favorite restaurant to fix for you then let us know and we will hook you up with the proper guide and equipment.
